Dear Ms. Gallery,

Professor John Doe mentioned to me today that you have an internship opening for a Gallery Assistant at the No Such Gallery. As a Painting major at the San Francisco Art Institute, I am very interested in exploring a career in galleries; I believe that working as an intern in your gallery will give me wonderful experience and help me decide if gallery work is right for me. While I am learning, I am positive that I can make an active contribution to your gallery as well.
In addition to my fascination with art, I have organizational and personal skills that will be useful in the gallery. While working for Professor Doe last summer cataloguing his collection of art, I learned to use a computer program to inventory and track the work. When he decided to sell part of his collection, I was able to easily locate the pieces. I also took responsibility for packing the work for shipment, obtaining the necessary insurance coverage, and verifying receipt of the works. I gained my people skills while working in a summer job as a lifeguard at Y Camp. In that position, it was important for me to maintain safety regulations without spoiling the campers’ fun. I learned to be diplomatic yet firm. That training will help me to work well with gallery clients.
My resume is enclosed for your consideration. I look forward to talking with you about this internship in an interview.  I am excited about the possibility of working with you at the No Such Gallery next semester.  Thank you for your time and attention.

Sincerely,

Joe Art Student

Gully T. Gumby
Specifics Manager
Fawlty Systems, Inc.
Torquay, NY 00000

Dear Mr. Gumby,

Your advertisement in Job Choices '05 prompted me to contact you about entry-level positions in electrical engineering at Fawlty Systems, LTD. The product engineering program at your company is very appealing. I am particularly interested in your project on digital systems. In May of this year I will receive a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from The Cooper Union and I hope that we will have an opportunity to discuss employment possibilities before that time.
In addition to the knowledge I've obtained from my education, my experience as an assistant to a plant engineer has provided me with an excellent background in the practical aspects of electrical engineering.
During my years at The Cooper Union, I have taken on many additional responsibilities. As a freshman, I managed the Student Council and played varsity tennis. In my junior year I was employed by the Student Services Office where I received first-hand experience in organization, teamwork and responsibility. I hope that you will seriously consider my enclosed résumé, which provides full details of my qualification.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to speaking with you. I may be reached between the hours of 9am and 5pm at 212 355.4343.
Sincerely,
Simon T. Brainsample

After viewing the exhibit, one 8-year old student poignantly commented, “I learned that everyone is going to be someone.” We invite you to participate in creating a society that is more inclusive for all. Consider submitting an original work of art and know that you are helping to make a difference in the lives of many, especially those of our children.

A good list of Do's and Don'ts

Artist’s Statements- Do’s and Don’ts

Over the course of time, I’ve developed a set of “do’s” and “don’ts” regarding artist’s statements. I’m sure that everyone reading this post  will have their own opinions on the subject. Let me hear from you if you have a particular issue I haven’t touched upon and I will add them in another post!
“Do’s”
  1. Make it only as long as it needs to be to say what you want to say. No longer.
  2. Write something that adds to the reader’s understanding of your work that can’t necessarily be learned from looking at the work itself.
  3. If you tell a story, make clear how it relates to the work, or to your philosophy as an artist.
  4. Make a point. Let there be a clear reason why you wrote this.
  5. Make the first sentence or two so interesting that I want to read the rest.
  6. Sound like you know what you are talking about. Use words that convey confidence.
  7. Use language that clarifies rather than obscures what you are talking about.
  8. Make sure the writing is free of technical errors (grammar, punctuation, spelling, syntax, etc.)
“Don’ts”
  1. Don’t make it unnecessarily long. Why go on and on if what you want to say can be said in one or two paragraphs?
  2. Don’t sound like everyone else out there. You are a unique individual with unique experiences and insights. Share them with your audience.
  3. Don’t just write about how much you have loved art since you were a kid.
  4. Don’t use language that is so opaque and convoluted and jargon-filled that only 1% of your audience can understand it.
  5. Don’t use words or phrases that weaken your reader’s confidence in you. Avoid phrases like “I hope….”, “I try to….”,  “I intended to ….”, etc.
  6. Don’t allow technical errors! Bad grammar, spelling or sentence structure can kill your credibility.
